Description
Realistic acrylic painting of the Dutch painter Arie Kater, painted by the Dutch fine artist Paul Meijering - the original painting is 120 x 90 cm and part of a permanent collection.
Arie Kater (Amsterdam, 17 May 1922 - there, 24 December 1977) was a Dutch painter, watercolourist and teacher
During World War II, he worked in the graphic arts during the day. He also painted in the evenings at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. After the war, he initially made a name for himself as an illustrator but soon became a much sought-after portrait painter. His best-known portraits are those of the actor Ko van Dijk, prime minister Cals and the art collector Chr. P. van Eeghen. He also painted many self-portraits and female nudes, often in combination. In 1952, he received the Royal Grant for Painting.
Galerie Spiegeling Art in Amsterdam has work by Arie Kater in its collection and his work is also present in the collection of Museum Henriette Polak in Zutphen and of the Rijksprentenkabinet. In 2009, granddaughter Nova van Dijk made a documentary about her grandfather, his surrender to king alcohol and his times: Arie Kater - The hangover comes later.
A contemplative figure is positioned in the foreground, looking away from a scene in the background where two individuals are in a vulnerable, intimate pose on a bed. The contrasting emotions between the solitary person and the coupled figures create a sense of introspection and tension.
