Artist's Description

Realistic acrylic portrait painting of Maurits Cornelus Escher, painted by the Dutch fine artist Paul Meijering - the original painting is 90 x 90 cm.

Maurits Cornelis (Mauk) Escher (Leeuwarden, 17 June 1898 - Hilversum, 27 March 1972) was a Dutch artist known for his woodcuts, wood engravings and lithographs, in which he often played with mathematical principles. He signed his work with MCE.

His engravings often depict impossible constructions, studies of infinity and interlocking geometric patterns (tessellations) that gradually morph into completely different shapes. Some very famous representations he drew were designed around impossible objects such as the Penrose staircase. It was not until the 1950s that he gained wider recognition as an artist, especially in the US. Crystallographers and mathematicians discovered symmetries and themes from their fields in his work. Escher's graphic work was used in scientific (textbooks) from 1960 onwards.

For almost 33 years now, Paul Meijering has been active with the paint brushes. As a 17- year old inspired youngster he joined the Academy of Arts in Enschede (Holland) in order to receive a native training in drawing- and painting technique. At that time (1980) the tendency of the abstract was running riot, and to his dismay and disappointment Paul found that the trade of the ancient masters was merely 'old hat', the realistic art being disregarded and looked down upon. After two years of useless botchery, there was only one conclusion to draw: "get autodidact, be a self-taught person!" Paul then left the academy to work for a living, but at the back of his mind there always loomed the passion of his life: to paint. At his spare time...
