Description
Realistic acrylic painting of the Dutch painter Hendrik Jan Wolter showing his work, painted by the Dutch fine artist artist Paul Meijering - the original painting is 90 x 90 cm and part of a permanent collection.
Hendrik Jan Wolter painted predominantly impressionist and naturalistic cityscapes. He was educated in Antwerp and lived for a long time in the Gooi region, where he belonged to the circle of artists around Hotel Hamdorff in Laren, such as Jan Sluijters, Co Breman, Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig. He exhibited regularly and was a (board) member of several societies. From 1914, he lived in Amsterdam. Even though he was aware of the various new developments and movements that succeeded each other after 1914, Wolter did not join them. In 1924, Wolter got an appointment as a professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He was known as a teacher who valued tradition but also recognised new currents. Throughout his life, he travelled extensively, painting landscapes and cityscapes on his travels. In 1938, Wolter returned to Laren. He died there in 1952.
A man with a solemn expression peers from the bottom corner against a backdrop of a vibrant marina scene, filled with boats and masts. Vivid colors and dynamic brushstrokes capture the bustling activity and the reflection of light on water.
