Description
Realistic acrylic painting of the late Dutch writer Jeroen Brouwers, painted by the artist Paul Meijering - The original painting is 90 x 90 cm and available for purchase.
Jeroen Godfried Maria Brouwers (Batavia, 30 April 1940 - Maastricht, 11 May 2022) was a Dutch writer, journalist and essayist.
He spent his childhood in Indonesia. After the Japanese invasion, he and part of his family ended up in a Japanese internment camp. His grandparents did not survive the internment camp. The family repatriated to the Netherlands in 1947 where his father - after a stay of several years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp - joined them in 1948.
After obtaining his Mulo diploma he worked for some time at a bank before entering military service. After his service he went to work in journalism. In 1964 he made his debut with the collection of short stories Het mes op de keel.
In 2018, Brouwers was awarded an honorary doctorate by Radboud University Nijmegen.
His new book "Client E. Busken" was published in February 2020 and won the Libris Literature Prize 2021. In honor of his eightieth birthday, the collection of letters 'To a Character' was published on April 30, 2020. In June 2022 Brouwers' autobiographical collection 'Alles echt gebeurd' will be published. Jeroen Brouwers died on May 11, 2022 at the age of 82.
