Realistic acrylic painting of a portrait of Rubens Santoro in front of one of his paintings of Venice, painted by the Dutch fine artist Paul Meijering - the original painting is 120 x 90 cm and available for purchase.
Rubens Santoro (October 26, 1859 in Mongrassano, Province of Cosenza, Calabria – December 30, 1941 in Naples) was an Italian painter.
He moved to Naples at 10 years of age, to study literature, but his inclination was painting. He only briefly enrolled at the Neapolitan Academy, instead, real life was his model. His first work was a small and simple genre piece: A Girl who Laughs, exhibited at the Promotrice. Domenico Morelli took note and encouraged him.
He began painting landscapes at Granatello, near Naples, where the painter Marià Fortuny was visiting. Fortuny commented to his fellow painter that:
Many end up where you started .... (you) continue to study more from life; of the ancient painters only two or three will learn from nature to...
For almost 33 years now, Paul Meijering has been active with the paint brushes. As a 17- year old inspired youngster he joined the Academy of Arts in Enschede (Holland) in order to receive a native training in drawing- and painting technique. At that time (1980) the tendency of the abstract was running riot, and to his dismay and disappointment Paul found that the trade of the ancient masters was merely 'old hat', the realistic art being disregarded and looked down upon. After two years of useless botchery, there was only one conclusion to draw: "get autodidact, be a self-taught person!" Paul then left the academy to work for a living, but at the back of his mind there always loomed the passion of his life: to paint. At his spare time...
