Hermannus Jantinus (Herman) van Veen (Utrecht, 14 March 1945) is a Dutch performing artist, writer, composer, director, musician, actor and presenter. He was trained as a violinist, singer and music educator. He is also an activist for children's rights.
Herman van Veen grew up as the only boy in a working-class family (his father was a typesetter for Het Parool) and studied violin, singing and music pedagogy at the Utrechts Conservatorium. While studying in Utrecht, Herman van Veen played violin in the Utrecht Student Choir and Orchestra.
In 1965, he made his theatre debut with the musically clownish solo programme Harlekijn, together with Laurens van Rooyen and Erik van der Wurff, among others. Since then, he has travelled the world and performed his shows in five languages. Partly at the request of UNICEF Netherlands and the Hague Residentie Orkest, in 1976 Van Veen wrote a theatre production about the brave Waterland duck Alfred J. Kwak. A picture book of this performance was published in 1979 with illustrations by Annet Kossen. In 1987, Alfred J. Kwak became a cartoon character, designed by German illustrator and character designer Harald Siepermann. A 52-part animated series of this was made into a cult in Japan in 1989 and shown worldwide.
To date, he has released 184 CDs, 21 DVDs, about 70 books, dozens of scripts for feature films directed by himself and for musical theatre productions, among others.
He was a volunteer, board member and goodwill ambassador for UNICEF Netherlands for many years.
